Wait, Wait!

Update: Dingle is home and keeping food down so far.  At least so far that I’ve found or smelled…

This year a new professor started at UCI in Jim’s department and we’ve hit it off pretty well.  I’ll shorten her name to M, and like me, she was a writing major in college.  She is also really crafty (though I don’t think she currently does any crafts).  She has a young daughter, Z, that is very, very cute and hilarious.  Her husband, B has quite a bit in common with Jim and he is pretty funny himself.  They live just one street over.

M e-mailed me last week and said that they bought tickets for the NPR show Wait, Wait…Don’t Tell Me! a while back and that additionally they had won 2 more tickets, so had a couple of free tickets if we wanted to join them.  And of course we did!  We love that show.  And yes, we admit fully, it is a nerdy thing to love.

I don’t think most of my blog readers even know what I’m talking about, so I’ll keep it brief and say that it is a weekly news quiz show.  Since I’m not really a big fan of listening to the news, it’s a fun way for me to keep up with what is going on  and if something strikes me as particularly interesting I can Google News it and read more for myself.

I wasn’t sure if it would translate on stage, but in the end decided that it is even funnier live than on the radio.  Also, the guest host was Tony Hawk and can I just say: I heart Tony Hawk.  He’s really smart and funny and now I can say I’ve seen Tony Hawk skate in person, even if it was just to roll his skate board across the stage.

We didn’t take our cameras, though Jim snapped a couple of pics with his i-phone that should give you an idea of the set up.

Other perks from the evening include: seeing M’s parents, house in Pasadena, as well as going to Pasadena with people who can tell us a little bit about it.  A quick bite and drink at a cute little wine bar before the show and another quick bite and drink at a beer bar after the show.  A road trip with M, B, Z and two cats in a sedan up to Pasadena…lol…the stuff movies are made of.  Anyway, it was a really cool experience, and now I can say I’ve been on both a TV show and a radio show since I’ve been here.

  1. WOW!! That’s amazing, Mel – PLUS, having neighbors / coworkers who share in your interests … U certainly won’t find that in *MY* neck o’ the woods …
Speaking of NERDY things to love – I’m also an avid NPR geek (well, a GEEK in general) and I LOVE “wait, wait …” – I even download the weekly podcasts on my iPod …

  2. That’s great of all said above! Espically about Dingle! Now you and Jim need to go to the Price is Right! One day when I can afford it I’m going to take my mom to that show. She has been a fan since 1971 and won’t miss the show unless she isn’t home!!!!

  3. I’m SO Jealous right now!
